Briscola is a popular Italian card game played with a 40-card deck. It’s a trick-taking game that relies on strategy and a bit of luck. Here’s how the game works: Setup & Dealing The deck is shuffled, and each player is dealt three cards. The next card is placed face up on the table—this card determines the trump suit (Briscola) for the game. The remaining deck is placed face down on top of the trump card, sometimes partially covering it. Special Rule: Deuce of Trump Before the game begins, if a player has the deuce of trump, they may retire the Briscola (trump card). This can only be done before the first hand is played. Gameplay The game proceeds counter-clockwise. The player to the right of the dealer plays the first card face up. Each player, in turn, plays one card until all have played. Winning a Trick The winner of a hand (trick) is determined by these rules: If any Briscola (trump) cards are played, the highest trump wins. If no trump cards are played, the highest card of the lead suit wins. Players are not required to follow suit, meaning they can play any card regardless of the lead suit. Collecting & Drawing Cards The player who wins a trick collects the cards and places them face down in their pile. Players then draw new cards from the remaining deck, starting with the trick winner. The last card drawn in the game should be the face-up Briscola (trump card). Scoring Once all cards are played, each player calculates the total point value of the cards in their pile. The player (or team) with the highest total score wins.
